HP, just like all other major laptop makers has designed a 2-in-1 laptop that is meant to tap into the versatility concept of such devices. Other successful products such as Apple iPad Pro and Microsoft Surface Pro 4 already blazed the trail and they are a huge success. From the quality of work done on the Elite X2 1012, it is sure to sit side by side with the giants of the category.
In a nutshell, this particular review model is a business hybrid laptop that is designed to be sturdy with high end features increasing its appeal. Expected to retail for approximately Ksh. 105, 000 in Kenya, this device is targeted at business executives who enjoy privileges which they are not ready to concede.
The chassis has a sleek aluminum finish to it yet as mentioned earlier, the whole unit is ragged at the same time. The metallic finish is complemented by a display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is a strengthened glass layer, added to the front to keep the screen from being damaged from shocks. This touchscreen measures 12.5 inches and has a resolution of 920 x 1280 pixels.
HP Elite X2 1012 is a suitable device to carry around with you since it can withstand the hazards of drops, scratches and knocks that are associated with frequent movement. It only weighs 1.23 kg meaning you won’t have a problem with portability.
A high quality chiclet keyboard designed for this hybrid is optional, but as is the case with all hybrids, there is no point buying the tablet alone without the keyboard since you miss the functionality. The bottom of the keyboard is made out of aluminum and therefore gives a premium feeling to touch. The travel keyboard has magnets which it uses to attach to the metallic connectors of the tablet. It has backlighting (we would have been astonished if it didn’t) and the keys are textured. When pressed, the keys have good feedback, an indicator of an ergonomic keyboard. Other accessories that you might want to consider purchasing alongside the detachable keyboard are a stand and a stylus which increase the device’s versatility further.
Since hybrids tend to be very thin, even compared to Ultrabooks, there are very few ports available. They include a type A USB port, a microUSB and a USB type C port with Thunderbolt support. There is also a Kensington lock on the left hand side which you can use to connect to the keyboard for security reasons. A microUSB and SIM card slot are also among the diverse features on the sides of the tablet. In case you need more ports, HP sells a wireless dock separately which you can use to connect other peripherals and storage devices.
There is a back and front- facing camera combo, but both are nothing much to write home about, except it’s always good to have any kind of camera at the front for when you need to make video calls. The video recording capability of the frontal camera here is good enough to execute most task well. Enough space is available from the native capacity that ranges between 128, 256 and 512 GB of SSD storage.
A range of Intel Core M processors are available inside the tablet depending on the choice you would wish to go for. These include Intel Core M3, M5 and M7. Experts compare the M7 skylake processor with the Core i5 generation in terms of performance. If you are the sort of person who needs more power at your disposal, then a Core i7 processor might be what you need to look for in a different device. However, it is hard to see how the Core M7 might fail in even the monumental tasks such as running heavy design software. The RAM on the other hand is plenty for multitasking given that there are only two choices, 4 GB and 8 GB, both of which are substantial.
