There are times when beautiful things come in small packages but to be truly great there has to be an element of relatively enormous proportions. Think of a big sports utility vehicle verses a nimble sports car; both are attractive automobiles but only one of them inspires the feeling of physical grandeur. The thing is, you have to be imposing to be able to throw your weight around and show who’s boss which is why the need arose for big beautiful phablets to provide such an experience in the midst of sleek compact smartphones.
Sony Xperia XA Ultra is a big beautiful phablet with plenty of power at the user’s disposal and an enviable pair of cameras. See, once someone describes your device in this manner, it means you are allowed to be prickly to everyone because it becomes your right to damage smaller egos… or at least it will feel right. Although it is impressive in multiple measures, it is a mid- range device which will spread fear in its category. If we venture further up to the big league, it clearly won’t stand a chance against the likes of Huawei Nexus 6P, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Apple iPhone 6S Plus. The beauty with this beast however is that you will not have to incur a small fortune in order to have it in your hands—and we are not talking false economy here. Perhaps soon we will see a high- end Sony phablet competing in the premium phone category but if the XA Ultra is anything to go by, then we should stand back and take a deep breath in anticipation.
Sony’s latest phablet includes a 6- inch full HD display with an edge- to- edge reach. It is brilliantly crisp and colorful with the IPS material offering good viewing angles. Although the screen- to- body ratio is more impressive than the one on its predecessor, the Xperia C5 Ultra, its fiercest competitor in the form of Huawei Mate 8 will outshine it ever so slightly.
For the processor, the XA Ultra phablet carries a Mediatek Helio P10 chipset with eight Cortex A53 cores and 3 GB of RAM. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, the latest installation of Google’s software runs smoothly on this device as expected. It is not earth shattering, but it will get things done. For internal storage space, 16 GB is provided with a dedicated memory card slot as well for expansion.
Both the cameras on Sony Xperia XA Ultra are so impressive that Sony does not assign any of them as either primary or secondary. The back camera has a 21.5 megapixel image sensor which has hybrid autofocus, a technology that enables the camera to snap in-focus images by predicting any and all sudden movements on any part of the subject.
It is in the selfie camera where Sony really turns up the heat on all its competitors. This phablet scorches through the tracks with a landmark 16 megapixel selfie snapper complete with Optical Image Stabilization as well as a dedicated LED flash (Note: The only other phone currently in the market with a selfie camera featuring OIS is HTC 10). It captures by far the best selfies both in low- light and highly illuminated backgrounds. Furthermore, the Exmor RS sensor in the Xperia XA Ultra is able to work together with the flash in near pitch dark conditions to produce stunning selfies.
Some of the notable features that were slashed out include a fingerprint scanner and USB type C port. If any of these two things matter to you, then take note. Otherwise, this large handset is a really great deal for entertainment, communication… and more entertainment. Once it starts tugging at your heart, you will most certainly end up falling in love in a BIG way.
