Sony has begun a brand new series of phones which we shall henceforth refer to as the X Series. These include the Xperia X, Xperia XA and Xperia X Performance. In order of pricing, Sony Xperia X settles in the middle of the high- end Xperia Performance and the budget- conscious Xperia XA.
Now that we are through with cumbersome introductions, let us go straight to the physical description. The Xperia X looks almost identical to the Xperia Performance from a distance. It has smoothed edges which accentuate the phone’s lustrous and slim form factor. You will recall that the Z series had sharper corners which means Sony is looking towards changing the design language and this particular phone delivers one that many users are bound to like. All around the phone, the aluminum and glass body design has been kept clean with the only markings available on the phone being the “Sony” logo at the front and the emblazoned “Xperia” at the back. This unibody design accounts for a weight of 153 grams and thickness of only 7.9 mm making handling quite comfortable. Although the build is seamlessly integrated, it should be noted that there is no IP68 certification, which is only found in the Xperia X Performance.
Also worth noting is that the entire X- series is conceptualized around 5 inch Triluminos displays. The Xperia X in particular features a 1080p resolution screen with X- Reality Engine and a pixel density of 441 ppi. This should get users of Sony Xperia Z5 Compact green with envy and is quite fitting for a classy mid- range smartphone.
Xperia X flaunts its cameras with more gusto than any of its other features. The main camera has a sensor resolution of 23 megapixels and an f/2.0 aperture. It shoots 5,520 x 4,140 pixels still images and has several other exciting features such as touch focus and HDR. It is almost the same camera used in the Xperia Z5 Compact, the only difference being that it does not have the capacity to shoot 4K video instead going for 1080p maximum resolution for video.
The Xperia X’s primary camera has also gotten more intelligent with the ability to reduce motion blur by using what Sony calls Predictive Hybrid autofocus. What happens when you are preparing to snap an object which is in motion is that the camera starts making calculations while focusing. These calculations involve analyzing the motion patterns of the moving object with the aim of predicting movement before the shot is taken. This implies that the autofocus will be able to capture any sudden movements so that when you press the shutter button, any blur caused by the movement is eliminated.
Photography is made much easier and fun on Sony smartphones courtesy of the dedicated two- stage shutter release button. Half- pressing this button focuses the image and further pressure leads to the capture. Sony has also made the software work with lightning speed now since it takes a fraction of a second to get the camera started. Sony has chosen a 13 megapixel camera for selfies which also has an f/2.0 aperture. It takes better quality low- light images and video quality of 1080p.
The processor on the Xperia X is a hexa core Qualcomm MSM8956 Snapdragon 650 unit featuring two CPUs: a dual-core 1.8 GHz Cortex A72 and a quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex A53 processor. These are backed by 3 GB of RAM while the internal storage can be either 32 GB or 64 GB. You will get up to 2 days of battery life from the non-removable Li-Ion 2620 mAh battery that comes with this smartphone. It may be slightly smaller than the one on Xperia Z5 Compact but marginally so.
