Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus cannot just be said to be a good budget phone since that would be a huge understatement. It is one of those devices that is created to dominate its niche, and as it turns out, it competes in the most lucrative segment of the smartphone marketplace.
A quick rundown of its features reveals that it is a well-designed 4G LTE handset that has better than average entertainment credentials, and it handles its android software without strained effort.
Despite what the name suggests, this is not a phablet. Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is a 5- inch device with an FHD IPS display and pixel density of 441 ppi. The Chinese manufacturer uses the “Plus” connotation as a way to differentiate this phone from its cheaper sibling Lenovo Vibe K5 which has a 5- inch screen as well but with a 720p display panel.
The Vibe K5 Plus display renders pretty accurate colors, with good brightness and contrast ratio. For me, the icing on the cake is the 5- inch display size which is very wieldy for one- handed use. On both lengths of the front side, there is very little bezel intruding into the screen, but the top and bottom bezels are rather large. These account for the 68.4 percent screen-to-body ratio.
Although the Vibe K5 Plus is made from simple materials and the design is minimalist, the faux- metal finish gives it visual appeal. Since it doesn’t have a unibody design, the back cover can be taken out to expose the removable 2750 mAh battery, two micro SIM slots and a dedicated micro-SD card slot.
At the back, you will also find a pair of stereo speakers that are enhanced by Dolby Atmos technology to deliver an audio experience that surpasses that of every other phone in this budget category. Coupled with the 1080p screen display, you will enjoy streaming video from the internet as well as playing back stored audio files and video clips. The only issue I can pick with the dual speakers is that sound is muffled when the phone is sitting on its back. Designers of Lenovo Vibe X3 had the right idea, but the two devices are playing in different leagues as it were. A 3.5mm headphone jack is present at the top edge of the phone for a more private audio experience.
Also on the top edge is the microUSB 2.0 port which is USB On- The- Go enabled, a feature that allows the phone to connect directly to other phones, flash drives, keyboards and other USB devices.
Android 5.1 Lollipop runs on this phone but it is heavily altered by Vibe user interface from the manufacturer. All the apps are located in the homescreens meaning there is no app drawer. The capacitive navigation keys are off-screen, located on the bottom bezel. Apart from the key that takes you to the apps that are running, there is a task manager included by the software designers which enables you to control the phone’s resources based on how much each app consumes at a time. This seems duplicitous but the extra detail in the task manager is still very useful in deciding which apps to close.
Qualcomm MSM8939v2 Snapdragon 616 processor with eight Cortex A53 cores is responsible for executing the workload. Half the cores have a speed of 1.5 GHz while the rest manage 1.2 GHz. Note that this is the same system used in the impressive Xiaomi Redmi 3. Together, these give good performance coupled with good ability to multitask courtesy of 2 GB of RAM. Internal memory is 16 GB, but remember there is an expansion slot in case you need it.
A 13 megapixel autofocus camera sits at the back left corner of the back panel with a single LED flash. The 5 megapixel camera at the front has a fixed focus lens, and therefore is less impressive than the primary cam. If you are a selfie zealot, for a little more cash, you could score the Sony Xperia C4 phablet which does a proper job with its 5 megapixels sensor. This phone also goes by the nametag Lenovo K5 Plus, so happy shopping folks.
