When you look at the specifications on this Lenovo phablet and compare them to that of last year’s Lenovo Vibe P1, you get a feeling that this is a slightly more modest version of the older model.
Though it was building on the successes that were delivered by the Vibe P1, Lenovo Vibe K4 Note is in actual sense a continuation of the legacy of Lenovo Vibe K3 Note phablet. Before all this gets too confusing, it should be remembered that the K- series (so to speak) is actually developed to be a budget smartphone. P series Lenovo phones on the other hand fall in the mid- range category.
From the appearance, Lenovo K4 Note might give away its budget credentials but it still maintains a great list of features that give it a mid- range status on paper. What buyers get for this phone is value for money. I suspect that although the recommended retail price is under Ksh. 20, 000 retailers might be tempted to mark this price up owing to the inherent value it offers. Currently, Lenovo K3 Note retails at Ksh. 17, 999 on Avechi.com which is a good sign that this new phablet will still retain budget pricing.
In most cases, the mark of a good phone is first revealed in the type of display it sports. This comes from the belief that what you see is what you get.
What you will see on Lenovo’s display panel is a 5.5- inch IPS LCD that has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and pixel density of 401 ppi. On top of it is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 scratch proof glass which is included this year. You will find that this display, coupled with enhanced stereo speakers make the Vibe K4 a very attractive phone for entertainment.
It is a twin SIM smartphone with both supporting 4G LTE network connectivity. Wifi, Bluetooth and Near Field Communication are also part of the sharing platforms you have access to in this device. As part of the “happy vibe” there is a handy fingerprint reader on the back that is swift to unlock the phone for use. Apart from securing the phone, the scanner can be employed as a shutter release button when taking photos which is a cool trick.
The Vibe K4 features Android 5.1 Lollipop software with a few customizations from the manufacturer as would be expected.
Lenovo chooses a Mediatek MT6753 chip for the processor. It is made up of eight Cortex- A53 cores with a clocking speed of 1.3 GHz. For RAM, there is a choice to be made between 2 GB and 3 GB types.
Internal storage space ranges from 8 GB to 32 GB with the most expensive version having the largest reserve of storage space. The Mali-T720 MP3 graphics processor might dampen the hopes of gaming fanatics but this is a compromise that Lenovo makes. Asphalt 8 for instance will not execute as well as you would want but other lighter games can be played smoothly.
The 13 megapixel camera on the Vibe K4 has a dual- tone pair of LED flash. It has an f/2.2 aperture as well as phase- detection autofocus. It also records 1080p video which is great for a budget phone. For selfies, an f/2.2 aperture lens is provided on a camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels. The camera app is a strip down from the one on Lenovo Vibe P1 but it is still adequate.
The phone also comes with a VR unit but it is unclear whether sellers in Kenya will stock these as well. Battery capacity is 3300 mAh but the fact that it is non- removable this time round is a little upsetting.
Overall, this phone is a great buy. And if the price of 11, 999 Indian Rupees (price in India) applies here in Kenya as well, then we should see this phone retail for a mouthwatering Ksh. 19, 000 or less.
