Over time, there are smartphones which depreciate in value so much that it becomes hard to determine why you bought them in the very first instance. Then there is the phone which at one point attracted a steep asking price but then eventually, owing to market forces, the retailers adjusted the price so low that it becomes a hidden gem. Lenovo S60’s story is the one described in the second instance.
Once a mid- range phone, Lenovo S60 now goes for Ksh. 11, 465 on Kilimall as the lowest price (at the time of writing this). From our research as seen on PriceKenya.com, some stores like Shopit sell it for as much as Ksh. 22, 500. Looking at the specs sheet, which we shall also include in tabulated form at the bottom end of this review, this is a deal which should whet your appetite.
So, why exactly did we give this budget phone an 81 per cent specs score? The explanation for this is pretty simple since it is based on the comparison on features and price vis-à-vis what similar products fetch. As I elaborate on the specs and where the bang for the buck lies, I would like you to draw comparisons with similar devices such as Huawei P8lite and HTC Desire 620. All these devices offer very attractive packages but just one has real value for money. You can also compare them directly on our compare feature on PriceKenya to arrive at your own preferred choice.
First, for the ladies, Lenovo S60 comes in yellow which is bright and lively to evoke a strong feminine aura. For the gentlemen, the graphite grey version would come in handy, but the pearl white variant is still a useful option to consider for anyone.
I would say with a slight degree of certainty that Huawei P8lite is the most attractive of the three devices. Lenovo S60 is however close by and would rank higher than HTC Desire 620 on this front. In terms of ability to maintain a streamlined and light presence, Lenovo S60 strikes the right chord. It weighs only 128 grams and measures 7.7 mm thin.
Being a 5- inch smartphone, it is also very wieldy to enable one handed manipulation. This particular screen has a HD resolution of 720p with a pixel density of 294 ppi. These days, there are many mid- rangers which come with FHD displays and if you have previously owned such, you might feel offended by this quality. But HD resolution is still quite decent and is something you can work with. Reading text, browsing, watching content and playing games will be a pleasant experience still. However, for this screen you will need to buy tempered glass to prevent it from damage. Note that only the P8lite offers Corning Gorilla Glass 3 among the three options.
One of the Achilles heel that bedevils the S60 is that fact that it is already more than a year old since hitting the market which means it ships with the ancient Android KitKat software. Not everything is lost however, since this is upgradable to Android Lollipop. Judging from the processor and RAM, it should even be possible to steam through to Marshmallow.
The processor features a Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 chipset and a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex A53 CPU. There is a whole 2 GB of RAM as well, which is plenty for a budget smartphone. Among the other exciting features to highlight is a dedicated SD card slot alongside the twin SIM slots. You therefore do not need to worry about the 8 GB of internal storage space making you to compromise since as it were there is very little to compromise.
The 13 megapixel and 5 megapixel camera combo is almost predictable nowadays for budget smartphone so the best it will get here is this footnote. A non-removable 2150 mAh Li-Po battery resides at the back. This is where HTC Desire 620 powers ahead with its 2100 mAh Li-Po option which is user- replaceable.
On the whole, no matter how good a product is, it must have the right price attached to it, otherwise it is all a game of smoke and mirrors. This is why I would highly recommend Lenovo S60 as a strong buy. Check the prices from the different vendors to find the best offer.
