There is a hot new budget phone in Kenya and its name is Huawei Y6 Pro. Being the cheapest in the latest batch of phones (the GR5 and GR3 smartphones are the other two) from the Chinese phone maker, it comes with what some might consider thrilling features when related to the price.
Yes, the Y6 Pro is a huge bargain considering that it is a phone that sells for under Ksh. 20, 000 yet is offers a HD display, a decent processor, 16 GB internal storage space and a large 4000 mAh battery that will make you forget all your charging problems.
From the outset, I have to declare my bias which is that I have always loved phones with a 5- inch display size (you’ll never hear the last of this) because in my view, they are wieldier and you can carry them comfortably in the pocket. Compared to the humongous phablets that have become the norm now, a 5-inch phone is what now stands out as rare; and being unique is almost always good. There was a time when sporting a 5.5 inch display would make you stand out. But with the likes of Infinix Note 2 (5.98- inch) and Huawei P8max (6.8- inch) displays becoming very popular today, the shock factor has clearly been replaced by a frenzy for even larger phones. Huawei Y6 Pro therefore caters for the believers of the smaller phone and there is a lot more in store which could be pretty enticing for the non- believers too.
The IPS LCD display itself has a HD resolution of 720p and a decent pixel density of 294 ppi. Users of Huawei P8lite and Samsung Galaxy J5 will sail in the same boat in this respect. Since there is no protective glass layer, getting a flip case or a glass protector will be a wise move. Again, because of the dimensions of 143.1 x 71.8 x 9.7 mm and a textured back, it is easier to grip the phone firmly to prevent accidental slips. One thing you will quickly notice though from the width is that it is pretty thick. Thicker than the P8lite and the Galaxy J5 and in the process, it is quite hefty at 160 grams. All this however is down to the momentous battery that is sealed permanently into the phone.
Internal storage space is standard at 16 GB, but this dual-SIM phone still has the provision for a dedicated memory card with a capacity to accommodate up to 128 GB of additional storage space. Huawei Y6 Pro comes with android 5.1.1 Lollipop laced with Huawei’s own EMUI interface which features a notifications panel that is pulled from the bottom end of the display. There is no app drawer (the idea seems to have been exhausted already) which means you swipe through the multiple windows from your home page to access the installed apps. You can install several software and files especially with the SD card, and these are not expensive anymore. Bulk up with a 16 GB unit (at least) and you will have very little to worry about.
Everything else from the camera setup to the processor is of the budget and lower mid- range category and therefore up to scratch in terms of what you’d expect to get in exchange for the money. But boy, does the battery make this phone even more attractive. And what’s more, it features reverse charging as well as fast charging.
